Character Spotlight: Kratos (God of War)

I thought I do this little profile on the Ghost of Spartan since this month will probably be dubbed the God of War month as we see the series draw the curtains. What makes Kratos tick? Well we can trace this back to the very first game in the series when David Jaffe came through the roof with this beast of a game. Undoubtedly it became one of the most brutal games to grace to the PS2 console then. We saw the nightmares which haunt him as he travel the seas; visions of him filling with blood lust and ultimately selling his soul to Ares, the God of War then. His servitude was not without price, his wife and only child were killed, by his own hands. Since then his mind has been consumed with those visions.

Kratos' journey is one that could ever be made by the Spartan himself, he had taken things he need from people and threw them into the belly of the beast (literally sometimes). He was hellbent on killing Ares for the God had tricked him into killing his own family and in order to achieve that goal he had to travel where Pandora's box was. Along the way Kratos fought and killed everything from Harpies to Minotaurs. Life was never going to be easy for Kratos, but I think that's the way he liked it. Either that or he couldn't care less what he was standing in his way, so long as he got revenge.

Kratos had finally succeeded in acquiring the box, only to be sent to the Underworld in which was the first of the Spartans trip down there. Not one for having his revenge taken away from him, he drags himself out of the Underworld and comes after Ares. Like all anti-hero boss fights, Ares tried to play dirty but Kratos stayed focused with his revenge. In the end, however, when all is said and done Kratos was not able to rid himself of the nightmares as the Gods are not willing to do the same either. The weight of his crimes eventually crashes him and he tries to commit suicide. But Athena is having none of it as Kratos was destined to become the new God of War.

Thus begins a new chapter in the saga where we find Kratos sitting on Mount Olympus, stirring war with his Spartan brother and making the other gods feel a bit uneasy. Kratos is still a bit of a loner, and not happy about his new position. However though he finds himself a new bigger enemy, Zeus. Zeus himself is paranoid that Kratos will take his position and decidedly strips Kratos of his godhood. As Kratos lay on the battle ground dying, he swore Zeus would pay for this. I don't know about you guys but I'm pretty sure usually Kratos doesn't bark without bite. For the second time in his life, he gets dragged to the Underworld but a new party enters the scene, Gaia (titan, mother Earth). She offers Kratos a chance to fight again, get his vengeance on Zeus and he accepts this offer to wreck chaos against Zeus once more.

Kratos now goes off to do the impossible, reach the Sisters of Fate and go back in time to fight Zeus again. Funnily enough, Kratos is able to achieve this feat because he is cold and show little or no remorse. Along the way, he slices up Greek legends of old and spills the blood of the innocent to reach these all powerful sisters. He reaches new depths of emotions where he nearly gives up but when remind of his purpose, Kratos has a fire that burns brighter than any light possible. Once all is said and then with the Sisters of Fate, he faces off with Zeus in a duel but of course the villain runs off to lick his wounds while another sacrifices for him, this time it is Athena. It is here that Kratos has convinced himself that all of Olympus will fall before he can have his revenge on Zeus. From here, Kratos goes to bring the Titans back to present day and heralds the third game.
