Going by a rumour-turned-real post on ScrawlFX, it appears some new (and, unfortunately, essentially useless) alterations are soon to be made to the PlayStation 3’s XMB in the next firmware update.

It’s official (well, according to PlayStation LifeStyle, anyway):
Firmware version 3.0 for PS3 is now live. This new update has significantly refreshed and improved our console’s XMB to provide a range of new functions and applications, making navigation through menus a more efficient, pleasurable experience. Who’d have thought it?

As reported by Media Week, SCEE has announced plans to launch a PlayStation Network video delivery service this November for PS3 and PSP users in France, Germany, Spain and the UK, with other territories to follow in 2010.

Sony (or, more specifically, Eric Lempel of Sony America) have told CVG that there will be no NXE-type overhaul of the XMB in the future. His main reason is that the XMB is an Emmy Award winning interface – people like it.
