Uncharted 2 to Hit the Silver Screen

Uncharted 2 Banner

On Monday 5th and Tuesday 6th October, a handful of movie theatres in America will give film buffs an opportunity to play the awe-inspiring Uncharted 2: Among Thieves – on Sony 4K hi-res digital projectors, no less. Monday’s showcase will be a private invitation-only event, whereas Tuesday’s will be open to the general public, promoted by radio and social networking sites.

Mike Fidler, Senior Vice President of Sony Electronics' Digital Cinema Solutions and Services Group, had this to say about the scheme:

'We think it's a start of something for us, and hope we can build this into a standard element in the movie-going experience. Our goal in converting theaters to digital is to go beyond the traditional movie-going experience and focus on helping exhibitors find ways to fill seats [...] gaming will be an important part of that equation.'

Considering how heavily the recession has impacted on the movie industry's profitability, could this initiative be the ideal way for cinemas to coax the home entertainment generation out of their armchairs and into the aisles?

We don't know about the rest of you, but projectors, PlayStation and popcorn combined sounds like gaming heaven to us. Fame, anyone?

PS3 Gets a Recovery Screen

My PS3 crashed at 2am last night. Due in no small part, I suspect, to the wonders of firmware 3.0, it just stopped working as I tried to turn Batman: Arkham Asylum off, so I had to hold my finger down on the power touchpad/button/thing until it powered down. After I restarted it, fearing the worst, it made an extra beep as it came on. My heart stopped for a second, until a low-resolution screen came up offering me options I've never before seen on my PS3.

This must be a recovery screen and, since my PS3 has crashed numerous times before without it appearing, it must have been added in firmware 3.0. The badly capitalised options are as follows:

  1. Restart System.
  2. Restore Default Settings.
  3. Restore File System.
  4. Rebuild Database.
  5. Restore PS3 System.
  6. System Update.

As it stands, I just selected 'Restart System' and the system restarted, returning me to the XMB just as if the mythical recovery screen had never existed in the first place. The XMB was slightly gimped, but that's because of the firmware, not the crash.

Clearly, this recovery system could be a brilliant inclusion for avoiding certain yellow lights of death from destroying our much loved black boxes of fun. Still, it's best that we don't experience any crashes of abject horror, but just in case, this may well be the recovery system of renewed hope +1. After the jump you can see a slightly blurred phone-camera image of the recovery screen, if you're into that kind of thing. You can even click the image and see it in massive-form, but that's probably overkill for 6 options on a black screen.
