Firmware 3.00 brought with it a lot of unpleasant surprises, such as injecting a dose of Titan into the XMB and an unhealthy amount of arse into the friends menu, as well as some actual bugs rather than just badly thought out aesthetics. It's completely up to you whether or not you consider the positive additions, such as enhanced headset support, the status bar, the iPlayer button in the UK and...erm...sparkles, if you're into that kind of thing, all outweigh the complete horror of the rest of the update.
Another change it brough with it was the new What's New icon on the XMB that brings up a list of some stuff. Some new stuff. It contains 12 icons, 3 games/applications you recently launched and 9 links to things in the store. It does look pretty good, though we can't help but think that it's just advertising Playstation Store content, really.
Still, the What's New icon might come in handy if you're not American but have an interest in their fancy video store (which we should be getting in the coming months). Using your American PSN account, go and click the What's New icon in the Playstation Network section of the XMB and, in the top right of the icons that will appear, there is a link to the Video Store.
Don't get too excited, though, you can't actually download any of the wonderful videos contained within, but you can look through the vast, vast library of films and TV episodes there to get a taste of what will (presumably) be in the store when it reaches your country. There's a lot of great stuff in there, too, from new comedies such as I Love You, Man to old cult horrors like the (eternally strange) Carrie, from Shaun of the Dead to Dawn of the Dead.
You'll never run out of things to watch, that's for sure.
