Following the arrival of Medal of Honor (and now Call of Duty: Black Ops), Bad Company 2’s online multiplayer is looking decidedly bare. Explosions of hype and bursts of PR have laid waste to its battlefield, the only remnants being decrepit buildings, blazing vehicles and the odd lonely sniper. But DICE is the Medic of videogame developers; armed with medikits and a trusty defibrillator, the Swedish company plans to revive its critically-acclaimed title by administering a generous dose of new downloadable content.

Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit was inspired by first-person shooters?

Believe it or not, the title of this article is entirely true. EA’s Marketing Vice President Keith Munro explained during an interview printed in the latest issue of EDGE Magazine that the upcoming addition to the Need for Speed series was, in part, inspired by the Bad Company and Call of Duty franchises.

I don’t know about you, but I love a good swear from time to time. I find first-person shooters in particular (Modern Warfare 2 being the main culprit) encourage expletives to gush from my mouth at a speed comparable to that of the gallons that cascade down Niagara Falls. Wow, what a picture that paints...

So when I read that Stuart Black, former Senior Designer for Criterion’s PS2 blockbuster Black, used the phrase “f***ing boring” to describe current shooters, I had to write about it.
