For anybody who has tried to play COD 4 online these past few weeks, it has been more frustrating than being a one legged man at an a** kicking contest. The online network, run by Activision under the name DemonWare has been as effective as the Learning Center’s latest class offering - “How to Marry for a Lifetime by Elizabeth Taylor”. It has at times completely prevented players from finding matches or even engage in private matches with friends. When it does “appear” to be working, you can sit in the lobby for what seems like an eternity, waiting for other players to show up.
Well, the folks at InfinityWard (who do not run the network) and Activision (who does) claim to be working on the problem. The network has been sporadically repaired over the past couple weeks but then proceeds to go south a few days or even hours later. So what’s a gamer obsessed with getting his 100th head shot with a sniper’s rifle to do?! Well, wait a few more days writes user FourZeroTwo on the Infinity Ward forums. FourZeroTwo appears to be a staff member who, in a dramatic break from corporate tradition, seems to feel the customers’ pain and genuinely want to help. Of course it probably wasn’t too bright when he mentioned that the engineers who would be working on the problem wouldn’t be starting until Monday, January 7th because that was when they came back from vacation. Gee, I would hate for one of them to come home early from Graceland just so me and the hundreds of thousands of other players who shelled out $60 could actually use the game as advertised.
I’ll be one of the first trying out the network and will keep you updated. Please add your experiences below. Also, while this certainly is not as serious as, say, the collapse of the telecommunications infrastructure, just how seriously do you take it when you can’t play a game online as advertised? Rant away, just please keep it clean…

The current state of COD4 online for the PS3 is really ruining the game’s image. It seems the current state of the network is completely absent. I’ve checked all my connections and settings. The PS3 is connected wireless and the Network Settings say 100% connection. I have no trouble downloading or other connections on our laptop. Basically I know our network is fine. Also we’ve connected with Dirt no problems.

Everyone has the same problem! It’s not like this is a random occurance or a changing problem. I hope if nothing else that infinity ward realized they made a mistake by outsourcing the network. They really dropped the ball. 60$ is a lot to pay for something that doesn’t work. I can probably speak for most when I say online was 90% of the reason I bought this game and I only bought two games so far ($). One thing would have been nice, in the message block from infinity ward could they have said they are experiencing some network problems instead of having people stare at a screen for 2 hours for nothing. Oh yeah, I was kind of pissed to be looking at the screen and see happy holidays from infinity ward.
Well, imagine how we, the Europeans, feel when we have paid 70 euros (102$) and don’t even have the 1st patch! Yesterday, i tried to play a game for 2 hours and whenever i managed to be in a party, the host was leaving during the game, a “Connection Interrupted” message occured and i just couldn’t play! Unless i see some improvement soon, i won’t be giving any money to activision again!
I went and bought a router just for this game. On for two matches and then down for hours.

I’ll be so stoked when this issue is sorted out. Online play had me almost crying (tears) out of frustration this weekend because I couldn’t connect to any COD4 games
I originally bought COD4 for PS3 when I went to pick up a copy of Halo 3. Ended up coming home with COD, and I loved it. Played a few games online and I was hooked. When I went to play Friday night, had problems and found the message on the board saying basically “not our fault, but we’ll take a look when vacations are done” I went out and bought Halo 3. Not a smart way to inspire consumer confidence. I will think twice before buying another activision product.
I feel this is rediculous. This game hasnt been working in pristine condition ever since i purchased it. Honestly, i dont think there will be any more games with the name Activision on them for a while in my game box. Since Cod has been messed up ive also had to go back to games such as rfom and ut3 which arent nearly as much fun . Honestly, i love cod, but i dont know hwo much longer i can put up with this nonsense.
Ever since Christmas day this has begun. I understand the holiday, but can you imagine how many dedicated customers have had bad online experinces since the holidays. Just a thought. Again, it seems the PS3 network was not prepared for this. *sigh* Thanks activision.

Nothing but a hassle to get into an online match and if so….It usually has a “Connection Lost” issue or mass lag…The worst online servers I have ever played on!
Well, I am not one for whining and complaining. I believe that actions speak louder than words. When the time comes, and IW/Activision drops the next cash cow on us, I will not buy it. I will recommend to my friends to stay away, and anyone else I meet who is interested for that matter. I suggest that you all do the same. If we ever want change, we need to hit them in the bottom line.
We have already been duped with CoD4 so there is not much we can do to them. Just remember the frustration, the annoyance, the “pain” and keep your money away from IW/Activision until they decide that they want to put out a quality product that can handle the masses. END RANT
If they were smart they would enable double xp or even triple for this garbage. Hell the problems didn’t start popping up til after XMAS. Wonder why? B/c all the little kiddies got it for XMAS and are taking up all the server space.
Consumers bought CoD4 for 65$ with the expectation that it was going to be mainly an online experience. Its dissapointing to see that companies screw over there customers by not maintaining there servers and not even informing players that they are even having issues. This would not cause as much a stir if they had at least bothered to tell us they are having problems instead of telling us happy holidays a week after the holidays past! Most of the time its not the networks that have problems but the people running them that have errors… get your shit together Activision.

This is F’d up for real. I’m saying, I’m a die hard Madden 08 online player (ezzzusjesus) and when I usually don’t play too many other games online. But when I beat COD4 my cousin was telling me that online was tight. So i get online play it and am hooked so much that I don’t play Madden online nearly as much. And now this crap happens. GET IT RIGHT FAST cause I have some levels to accomplish. FE_3 online. hit me up.
I haven’t had any problems connecting to matches, sometimes the wait has been a couple of minutes longer. I’m looking forward for the update though so I can play with US players again.
I think its annoying, when i try and play it takes about 10 minuites to join a game, often longer (sometimes shorter however). This is frustrating and does not happen on other games! Also, i cannot join games that my friends are playing in.
im really dissapointed about this and i really liked COD4 it is soooo much fun and this should be a quick fix for Activision and IW hopefully they can revamp the online scheme as well by adding more perks weapons achievements and unlockables and i think that people that enter prestige mode should get something in return just some thoughts to be thought about. im still confident in Activision and IW
lol SAME problem, except for me its usually i cant join tdm…played last night and fell asleep waiting to join a game then woke up 30 mins later and retried and joined a sabotage and then tdm…try to do team objective, those almost always work for me or team hardcore

What about the rest of us in Australia? When we do get connected into a game it hooks us up with a server from over seas and we lag behind with 1 bar signal to server bar and everyone else in that game has full 4 bars signal to server.

i hope this patch comes soon just got to level 39 want to crack on with some of the other challenges. its so adictive. only appear to have problems with the teamdeathmatch games (got 6 more wins to get on that one!) can get onto most of the other ones but cant join invited games. really frustrating. this is really the first games i have played to its full on line and can appreciate that a mass influx over christmas overloading everything. i think the ps network is a year or 2 behind the xboxlive anyway you cant add friends whilst playing etc it is a bit lame but i know over the coming months it will get sorted. if anyone wants to add me onto the friends list my tag is guitarhero1

Having a wife gives me limited time on the PS3 a night. How better spent than looking at the same screen all night waiting to connect to a game that ended 4 hour ago ish. Sort it please my marriage is suffering!!!

I have been playing online a lot the last couple of days. I have had the same problems with getting into a game, but I noticed that it you enter a room and no one is there, then just come out of it and try to get into another room. Keep doing that until you get in a game, it is way faster then waiting for people to join your game. The whole host ending the game thing SUCKS! I hope that gets fixed at least.
I am so frustrated with this game, I want to return it and i recieved it as a gift for xmas. I get so frutrated with it that i just give up with trying and just go and take out my frutration on Warhawk, which in my eyes is more fun then call of duty right now, The company that made COD4 should have took a lession from the online set up from warhawk, its 1000 times better and never had a issue from the getgo

A bad situation made worse. Since December ‘07 us in the UK have been experiencing random disconections, phantom error messages & mysterious host disconnections. Did I mention the long, long lobby waits?! Typical Brits we endured it & enjoyed the odd uninterrupted game. Now we can’t connect at all! Instead the servers are down, network errrs, consant sign outs from PSN (what’s that about), lock ups, freezes, crashes. I’m devasted! I’ve got other games but no network play on COD4 hurts& no explanation message on the lobby is a real ick in the teeth. Who to blame SCEE? Activision? Infinity Ward? I know PSN is free (selling point over an xbox) but still this is truly poor all round.
Well atleast COD 4 is better than Warhawk which I can’t seem to Bloodly load it on my PS3. After several attempts to load Warhawk on to my PS3 I just gave up on it, I’ll keep the Headset that came with it but as far as I’m concern Warhawk is going down the Garbage Shoot.

OK, I dont get how anyone can say that they paid 60 dollars for something that doesnt work. The game works fine its the network that is fucked up. Give it time though, shit will be sorted. Everything has problems.
it’s not just you in the UK, I’m in the US and get the same crap. In order to not receive the network errors or the interrupted connection signs I had to open the ports on my home network for COD4 online play… Solved the connection interruption problems but I still get issues with long lobby times…
I have a quick and easy workaround - bin COD4 and keep playing resistance. Its 100 times more fun anyway, better server, better user interface and far superior community interface.

It’s a shame because it is a beautiful game when it runs at full capacity, fix the damn server guys, its the 11th of jan and i still can’t get through on my PS3, atleast keep it running till GTA 4 is released.

PS3 is my first console ever. In the past I always played games on PC so I’m new to COD4 and thought it was just me at first. When I went online to read about at the begining of January I noticed that everyone else was posting the same thing and there were articles about it everywhere. Talking about the dreaded “Downloading Game Settings” screen. But when I looked at the dates these messages and articles were from November of last year. This really upsets me because it seems they can’t keep the server up for more than a month without it totally crashing.
The worst part for me is that I really don’t know what the problem is or when its working so I waste a lot of time checking and waiting. I am able to play sporatically if I leave the screen on for hours and hope I catching it while its working.
They should put on the message of the day what the status is of the network for the day.
what i want to know is why does it work perfectly on the 360 and not on the ps3.i dont care if i have to pay around 40 dollars a year.all i want is to play online and that much money is nothing.why cant ps3 give up this free network thing and get the same servers as the xbox live.please someone tell why they cant do that .im actually am thinking of getting rid of my ps3 and getting an xbox and im sure a lot of people are contemplating the same thing.thank you.
right reading your problems i had problems with need for speed pro street over xmas… what i believed happened was we done an update a few days prior……. so when i couldn’t play nfs speed for a week i ask a friend what it could be after ea being useless and are still on it as i speak….. he said check your internet connection settings found under Network settings… dont select easy skip across to upnp if disabled enable…… but if enabled disable wait a min then enable…. then to test connection the first time i done this upnp said unavable and nat type said type3
and you may have problems eith headsets and other shit…. but when i tried nfs it work and when i checked my setting later upnp was availble and was back on type2 so try this and hope it helps any problems add me as a friend and i will try and explain clearer

also looking into connection problems… you may wanna check what connection your internet speed is by doing a speed check on your line just search what ever line your with virgin bt speed check….. also you may have to open some ports in your lines fire wall….. but try the other thing first i have been playing cod4 since dec and had no problems apart from losing psn connection a couple of times a day but what do you expect when 10000 are playing this online…..
Still lots of problems especially when trying to play with friends. I can only join party invites from certain friends others just fail.
Why can’t they just add lobbies with listings of games and let you pick and choose the game you want to join.
This way if the party invite isn’t working, your friends could at least tell you where they are and you could join manually.
ive been playing friend online no problem…. yeah sure there are problems now and again but i don’t have many apart from psnetwork keep kicking me out when its super busy but thats whole games it happens to but thats gunna happen when so many people are playing…. you think cod is bad you try ea games there proper shit nfs sucks can very rarely get on there…
and as for fight night 3 online sucked like fuck… really hard to get an invite……have you done all the network updates and tweaked your settings
the thing is with party invites is timing if your in a game and havnt checked your invites by pressing start you don’t get the invite until there game has started and the lobby is full. so when you leave your game you cant get in. what i do is when i go online i send invites to all friends online so when there game finish they either come into my lobby or i get an invite to them………

Everytime i get an urge to play it i have to be forced to not play it due to infinity ward’s and activision’s supreme effort to fix this game. The game is getting its rep ruined because no one can play this game online. All i’m going to say is that it will be an extremely long time before there is another activision game in my house.

I get online with ps3 for COD4, and then go online, find a game, and it doesn’t matter any game option I chose ie: free for all, team deathmatch,etc.. It get’s stuck on “Synchronizing game settings” for like 5 minutes and then goes back to the normal screen saying “Notice - Game lobby closed”, then hit x, and it says “Notice - Timed out” This ROYALLY sucks since it has never happened before and none of my friends have this issue

Yes, I get numbers in the upper right hand corner but have had better (but not excellent) luck at playing online with US players.

COD4 on ps3 is sucking balls for me. ive tryed to get into ps3 forums but i cant post new threds ive gone everywhere i can to find out why only me and a few of my friends can party invite eachother and not all of us.. its really pissing me off!! i cant find any info on this… but the strange thing is i am only connecting to 40gigs and cant connect with 80s… or atleast thats how it seems so far.

It’s deplorable the state the online functionality is at for this game. The fact that so many of us are impacted by this you’d want to think that Activision/Infinity Ward would be working harder on bringing their customer base some news of the work they are doing.
It’s quite possible I’ll never purchase an Activision or Infinity Ward product again. It will be through customer service that they make any future sale of their product for me.
Rather than gaming, I’m writing some crappy post at PS3Vault … how lame is that?
the state of call of duty 4 online gaming is absolutely unacceptable, many many people shelled out £50 for this game to be able to play online, and at present this just isnt happening with enough regularity, as others have said sometimes it takes an eternity to find a game……..and thats if your lucky! come on activision, GET IT SORTED!
I have the same problem …. it’s really pissed me off … Activision really don’t care about us guys. I’ve tried everything thinking that my network was the problem. I tried to forward the port 28960 on my router , but nothing , it keeps displaying ”downloading game settings”. It really sucks …. Good Luck
like everyone else on cod4 i have had connection problems but when i do get into the online game i and a few of my friends have unloaded a full clip into what appears to be an enemy only to have them casualy stroll up and stab you this gets very annoying at times and they don’t have juggernaut equiped.how is it that some of the players can turn around on a sixpence and when i try its like that scene from the austin powers movie where he is trapped between two walls in that electric cart.
cod4 is a great game and my friends and i will try to take the fight on when we get connected that is regardless of its flaws that is maybe part of the problem there why should activision waste money fixing things when we all go and use the damn thing anyway.

have you looked at your router setings your ntu should be set at 1400 the default setting is usually 1492 but try changing that to 1400 it might help with your connection you can also try what judeone has writen on jan 15th read his post and give that a try but cod4 will not work if your ps3 is only getting a nat3 connection

Yo i only have one problem on COD4 on PS3 which i have only noticed once i joined a clan. Im completely unable to connect to peoples rooms under an invite which makes beening in the clan pretty difficult if you cant even join with your buddies… lmao they need to fix this very soon. I was wondering how long do you sit on the “downloading game settings” screen before its done because my ps3 ends up freezing up after 45 minutes and I’m wondering if continuing to download is really even helping me at all?
my ps3 will connect to the internet fine but when i try to join games it just puts me in a game by myself and says “waiting for other players to join.” This only happens when i am at my house however, when i am at my friend’s house it puts me into games instantly with no lag or problems. Somebody please tell me if this is due to my internet service or what?

i love call of duty to bits and im having loads of problems with it but iv found a bit of a solution ( to logging in to the game) i make sure my ps3 is already signed in to the ps3 network before hand (seems to work) but as for this connection interrupted ITS DRIVING ME MAD! and wots with the host, if they leave it ends the game that seems a bit primative. any way all watch out for me killing you , hehe im very rarley not in the top 3 recently , iv also noticed im getting in to games easier thou just dont seem to be staying in them for long! p.s Haze wont have any of these problems iv heard. and i would also like to know the answer to mats question.

I have found that for myself personally that if i renew my ip address and disconnect all but my ps3 from my router my 3 bar connection comes back and im no longer a sitting duck in the game! and just for the record when this game runs smoothly online its brilliant!
I need help I started playing and after two games I get connection interruption and i cant play cause anytime I move it says connection interruption and jumps me around, Ive opened all the ports that I need to tcp 80 443 5223 10070-10080 9293 3074. udp 3478 3479 3658 10070 6000-6999 3075. I have cable modem with a speed of 768 Kbps (up/down), a netgear wireless router 54 Mbps model WGR614v8. what am i doing wrong
Well I have to say of all the people I know that have Call of Duty 4 ( which is alot,sush ) for the PS3 iam the only one known to have this problem. And it is really pee’ing me off. For almost a straight month I sit at the downloading game settings screen and go for dinner and maybe just maybe I might be able to get on. Oh and then after a couple of games i get the server connection lost just when I scored a lot of points. WTH people. I have never ever seen an online game with such poor support for maintaining the servers. Hell iam not even a serious gamer but if I owned a company and was in charge of taking thousands and thousands of dollars from consumers with the promise of online play. I would make damn that I would keep my product working.Or at the very least post something when you boot the game saying there is something wrong with the server sorry for the inconvienence. At least acknowledge that there is a problem so people dont go nuts trying to figure it out. Look what happened to Warhawk now there was no reason for that. Its a straight up online only game that came out way to early with alot of problems. I baught my ps3 yesterday and i still haven’t been able to play more than 2 games online before i loose connection and this morning i can’t connect at all and i keep getting error 33. This is really p***ing me off since i baught the ps3 for call of duty 4 to be honest and now it isn’t working.

Ya know i dont ever really have problems getting online and i am usually online everday from like 8pm to 2 or 3 am the only troubles i have are usually in large Ground Wars when the screen lags so bad its like your shooting teleporting marine!!!!!!
I have got online last night before the DNS servers went down I had about 8 games, I fixed that because i got rid of McAfee on my computer system which had my modem on which my ps3 was picking up the wireless. So my McAfee must of been blocking the ports needed. Now i think its the server end of them that is the problem for me because our area has a slow broadband connection so i might be not allowed on in the busy times or something.
I dunno it works sometimes but now i am getting disconnected!!.
Any suggestions of when to try when i should get on in not so busy times. ?
I think it should be okay soon hopefully since i baught it for this game and to go online. Also baught the ps3 for it too. I baught it and this happen which is very anoying!
It has been hit or miss for me. This afternoon I was able to get past the “DGS” screen after only 10 minutes, and then I was able to play for a good couple hours. Tonight, the darn thing just won’t go any further. I am getting sick of this. Activision better pull their heads out and start correcting this issue. Infinity Ward isn’t much better; I have been trying to register for their online forum for 2 DAYS now, and still haven’t got a confirmation email. They are just as bad as the damn server. I intend to boycott any further Activision/Demonware games.
I say everyone that has purchased this piece of crap march back to Best Buy , Futureshop, ebgames or gamestop or whereever you bought it and demand a refund ( iam going to this weekend. And i will do it nicely with out looking like a bent out of shape nerd / physco). It does not seem like activision gives a rats ass. Oh by the way the PC version seems to have all the fancy dancy latest updates and ahem.>DRIVERS to run the FING THING ONLINE> Why in the hell do we get to sit with our thumbs up our arses whlie PC and 360 gamers get to enjoy this.game online. i never had any problems with cod4 until tonight and i spen hours looking for solutions and only saw the same thing over and over “any suggestions.” so im not going to ask for help im just going to say that this is very disappointing and is letting down thousands of gamers. is this valid or am i the only person who thinks this?

ive played cod 4 on xbox 360 and it worked fine but got it on my ps3 today and i cant get past the downloading game settings. its pissing me off.
its not my internet connection because the game works fine on my 360m and all my other ps3 games works fine.

okay, yes i realize this is a ps3 website, and i am an xbox360 owner,but i googled COD4 problems, and i got this, and yes, i have the same problem, perfect connection, i play halo 3 and rainbow 6 vegas and always have the best connection, but i left my xbox on for 6 hours yesterday, finnaly found a game, then it said cant connect to host… help!
I am having all of the same problems…at first i thought backing out to the online screen and then going back into the lobby helped a little, but it was just sheer luck that it was working as well as it did. Once i get in i am usually fine…………….but thats assuming that you can get in, so here I sit as i type waiting for those #$@%^$# to fix it so I can play an awesome game!
I have had this game since christmas, and have no problems since i sold my soul to satan… Appart from that pants bit when the host leaves (See rants above) and the great bit when the network disconnects and i fly around the war zone like Michael Jackson on speed.
But why oh why can i not ply my friends without the game throwing a hissy fit??
I’m gonna try the suggestions above tonight and see.

I had never been able to connect to any online cod4 game of any kind. I was using my parents connection but moved to my own place and everything is fine now. Games are being joined really quickly and connections within the games are good except for maybe 3 times when I lost my connection. I did download a patch before playing on the new connection, so I’m assuming thats why.
Ive got COD4, cable modem and a phat TV and I would say that 9 out of 10 times I cannot play this damn game online. I mean if friends invite me to a game, it usually will work (with a few tries). But if I try to find my own game, I cant. I mean Im online, I can view which friends are online too, but if I try to actually find a game…I cant. Its total BS. Ive had this game for 2 weeks now and have been able to play it like only 5 times online. Its a total joke. Ive been sitting with it “online” now for well over an hour now…and still Waiting for 5 more players…
Well in my case everything runs pretty much ok…I donwload the last update without problems, and i have a pretty good conexion, I dont have to wait a lot to joing a game…and when it seems to joing some game with nobody there, i just leave the lobby and joing again and it finds a game right away…
My only problem is that at least 3 times the other day , i have tried to joing my friends game and i coudnt, i dont remmeber the error but it didnt let me joing his game…
I never tried after that but i do remmeber the first day i got the game(a week ago) i was able to play a few games with the same friend.So maybe they are having some problems now, i dont know…ill try it today again.
Other than that and some “the lobby was closed” message, the game works good ….

Another thing…Somebody said something about “NAT type”….so maybe that the problem…if you dont have NAT 2, on your PS3 maybe thats the problem… NAT 3 give you some problems online sometimes…
If you want to know how to check or how to change your NAT type on your PS3…im going to give you some links so you can learn how to do it and i hope that works for most of you out there….

OMFG…..so activision decided to let me play for a whole two days. So now i’ve owned COD4 since december 17 and have got on 3 times, new years eve i played for like two hours, and yesterday i played for a few hours. 60$ for two days of game play, THANKS ACTIVISION. not only that two of my usb ports are fried, playstation is like two months old, besides free online (which is useless to me) ps3’s are garbage.
When I run the test it already says Im running at Type 2. It’s BS that my cousin and other buddies can play this game whenever they want and I cant.
PS, Ive had the game for a few weeks and still havent exceeded two hours of total game play. I feel like I deserve a full refund on this game. I bought it to play online, period.
wasnt able to get online since the beginning January. tried everyday and just sat in the log in room and would never let me in the room. i got pissed off and started my own private match with myself. after i shot a few cars and blew myself up i left the room. tried getting back into a free for all and it let me in right away. now everytime i try to get online i start up my own private match, and immediately exit it and 4 out of 5 times it lets me right into a game. if it doesnt work just go back and try it again. hope this works for u too.
I’ve gotten on cod4 4 xbox live played games no problem with random strangers.
I CAN’T PLAY ANY OF MY FRIENDS in my list…it’s f-cking driving me insane we send game invites and get an error after accepting the game invite…we can’t even get a private chat going…

yep the friends invitations is really pushing my buttons with the error message, this is one big f***king joke.
Yeah, I have no problem getting online matches with strangers but I can’t play with my friends. That’s why I bought the damn game. This really pisses me off. I with there was someone I could do physical damage to for this.
My above problems were sovled by replacing my dogy PS3 and i was able to download the game update and the system firmware with in 45 minutes at set the whole ps3 up in that time unlike last time which took an un real 4 hours to do.
I was still getting disconnected all the time because i was using wireless and because i have so many wireless devices in my home the connection would always get disconnected with in 4 minutes or so….. I would advice those who are using wirless to get an ethernet cable pluged in because since i’ve done that I have no been disconnected from one game in the last week and half. !!!!!!

i sometimes have some problems connecting but i find if you exit the room then try re-enter it works alot quicker anybody have the problem of XP points not saving propperly? I get the points down to zero and my rank should go up but instead my points go into minus points and the blue bar goes outside the box. most of the time it fixes itself but takes a long time and a waste of alot of points let me know i’d appreciate it and add me as friend we can have a few games my id is celt32

I have been playing for about 2 months with little to no problem - period. Now for th past week or so it takes an eternity to download game settings, I can find a game right away but it takes forever, sometimes up to 8 minutes for the match to start. It get stucks on “setting up game”. What’s worse - I can hear the others playing via the headset. Then it will dump me into the game with 2 -3 minutes left. There is no way to quit the game with resetting the whole thing. It’s almost not worth it.
I have had this game since early January and I love it. I have had very few problems although I have not yet tried a private match. I am wondering if some of the problems, people are having ,is with their internet service providers. They may have to contact their i.s.p., to let them know they want to game online ,so the i.s.p will remove blocks that they may have applied. This is what i had to do. this is drivin me insane i been playin online for about 3 days but only 12 online hours i have drove my rank from zero to twenty somethin in no time and never played it before until about 4 days ago i beat the game in a few hours start to end and love the online play but have the same problem everyone has with finding matches its on for a while but has shut down at 3 am or so for the past 3 nights and sometimes during the evening i will be playin away then nothing …. i don know much about online gamin so i want to know is there any way other players can block me or somethin i know its messed up cuz i read all the other complaints but still want to know ???? any way the game is awesome the online stuff needs to be fixed NOW

what the hell is this shit, you dish out 60 dollars for the online play and the damn company doesnt even have working servers, nobody bought this game for the damn campaign , it only takes a day, so how about the retards at the company promoting online play actually make it do what its supposed to, i have had problem with this game since the first day i got it
i went out and get wireless internet installed to my ps3 just for this game, im barely ever even able to get onto a server, and when i do the “connection is interupted” and it shows the picture of the loose ethernet cable,,,, ummm how the hell do i have a loose connection on wireless, this problem doesnt happen in ANY other online games, activision must be a ton of retards
Hey great news folks THERE IS AN UPDATE. AND IN TRUE ACTIVISION FASHION> IT DOES DICK ALL>i backed up all my save info to a flash drive DELETED EVERYTHING. started up again from fresh and the online server still saves your progression ( levels,weapon loadouts etc. ) and was told game update now avail and required. Great. I re download update shut the system off and turn back on. Well the only improvement i see is now i can play versus mode or it stops freezing on me.Thanks Activision you have offically scewed this game franchise over and ran it into the ground.

I have even gone as far as to re-install my ps3 and my hub (in case my network was at fault) and re download the updates it makes no difference

go on your computer and log onto your router and DISABLE YOUR UPNP and open up your ports 3074 and 3075 and put UDP after. THIS IS 100 PERCENT FIX. for the past few days i have been trying to go online on cod and it has no worked. all that happens is the “downloading game settings…” comes up and it stays there and it then frezzes with the music still playing and i have tried leaving it for hours and yet the “downloading game settings…” is still on.
HAS THIS HAPPENED TO ANYONE ELSE, AND IF SO HOW DID YOU FIX IT OR IS IT JUST THE COD SERVERS?
the same for me to, i go to multiplayer then all it comes up with is downloading settings. tried 1 thing and it works until you quit the game, turn off your router for a few seconds then back on, once the router as configured try going online again, it works for me, but have to keep turning it off and on before playing, like i said once i go off the game completely its back to square 1, dont know what to do if you have not got a router, hope this helps short term.

I’m having the same problem as Martin & thehunter24, “downloading same settings” when trying to pick the type of play ie “free for all”. I hav’nt yet tried the reboot of my router, but i cant see how this should make a difference. The problem cannot be with our routers, it must be something that the company who run the servers are doing, either maintanance or update’s. Either way, its really annoying, and i’d rather not have to reboot my router each time i want to play cod online. Do any1 know whats going on?
hi when i get to down loading game settings on cod4 it froz on me to and i was told just to leave it for about 3 days and it should work or maybe you should try the playstation support centre
If you know how to open the ports on your computers router then read my comment above as to how to fix the problem. I posted which ports have to be opened and what to put in.This will work. Dont count on getting tech support from anybody or let the screen sit because that will get you nowhere.
Okay, i buy COD4 and the game is pretty cool looking. I heard the online play was also pretty sweet so i go on and it takes and hour for me to actually match with ONE player. Pissed right off, i try and try again until i give up. So i play the storymode and to my surpise it is SHORT AS HELL. Not satisfied at all.
Get an Xbox 360 - no lag, more updated patches, we’ve already got em’ and alot faster.
I have both 360 and ps3, but neva play my x-box because i hate the controls and have always stuck with the playstation. i recently got my ps3 online and got hooked on cod 4 it’s awsome and want to play all the time, at first it ran so smooth and i could’t get enough but latetly i’m getting so frustrated staring at the downloading game settings every time i try find a game. if it stays like this i mite be gettin my x-box online and happly pay £40 a year even if i hate the controls, i would rather stick with the ps3 bcuz i do think its the betta console but the online needs to get sorted and quick.
People would you please read the forums……maybe you WILL GET AN ANSWER…I HAVE THE SOLUTION POSTED ABOVE…nothing wrong with the console or game….its your router settings. Activision has not offered any listings for help on this and i doubt they ever will. the newest update is what scewed up your online gaming. Thanks activision for the notice. hi i got my ps3 4 christmas cod worked fine until about the 10th of march i cud download the game setings but then when they were being downloaded 2 find a game it took forever i kept on cancelling and on the forth time it worked. when i was reading the info above i tried it again it worked straight away. weird

just to let you know that i have done what “wpgSTANG” suggested in how to fix the problem and it worked straight away.
It took me a while to work out what to do (on my router) but now i get the game settings straight away instead of waiting hours.
I did what wpgSTANG suggested, I’m assuming tat opening ports means to do Port Forwarding? 3074 to 3075 UDP on whatever IP the PS3 is? Not working though.
I did to what wpgSTANG said. I just wrote in port forwarding 3074 and in name of the port 3074UDP. Then a new port 3075 and the name 3075UDP. Every router isn´t the same. But trust me, to try diffrent combos or if it don´t work contact a proffesional to do it for you. Because DAMN its worth it=D

Ok, so ive changed my mind about wanting to rip my balls off.
I’d tried forwarding loads of different ports to several ip addresses but i still kept getting kicked out of games because of a connectin interruption.
I know this solution isnt that convenient for alot of you as alot of your routers probably aren’t close to your ps3s, but for those of you whose routers are, then just use your ethernet cables that you got free with your routers and plug it into the ps3!
Then go to set up internet connection on the ps3 network settings and set it up as wired instead of wireless.
And yes ethernet cables are big and yellow but its a small price to pay to be able to play Call of Duty and actually finish a game!

i am having the same trouble to but my friend is some how playing i dont get that
today is may 15 2008, i am still having this problem for my ps3 … i have been setting up the game for more than 3 mins and it still wont load to the game. does anyone know when there is a solution to this problem? however, some of my friends are playing perfectly normal, this is weird.
