Call of Duty 4 Online Fix Coming
For anybody who has tried to play COD 4 online these past few weeks, it has been more frustrating than being a one legged man at an a** kicking contest. The online network, run by Activision under the name DemonWare has been as effective as the Learning Center's latest class offering - "How to Marry for a Lifetime by Elizabeth Taylor". It has at times completely prevented players from finding matches or even engage in private matches with friends. When it does "appear" to be working, you can sit in the lobby for what seems like an eternity, waiting for other players to show up.
Well, the folks at InfinityWard (who do not run the network) and Activision (who does) claim to be working on the problem. The network has been sporadically repaired over the past couple weeks but then proceeds to go south a few days or even hours later. So what's a gamer obsessed with getting his 100th head shot with a sniper's rifle to do?! Well, wait a few more days writes user FourZeroTwo on the Infinity Ward forums. FourZeroTwo appears to be a staff member who, in a dramatic break from corporate tradition, seems to feel the customers' pain and genuinely want to help. Of course it probably wasn't too bright when he mentioned that the engineers who would be working on the problem wouldn't be starting until Monday, January 7th because that was when they came back from vacation. Gee, I would hate for one of them to come home early from Graceland just so me and the hundreds of thousands of other players who shelled out $60 could actually use the game as advertised.
I'll be one of the first trying out the network and will keep you updated. Please add your experiences below. Also, while this certainly is not as serious as, say, the collapse of the telecommunications infrastructure, just how seriously do you take it when you can't play a game online as advertised? Rant away, just please keep it clean...

When i Downloaded game it Not Working what to do Help
I was playing a came then all of a sudden people were doing glitches(turning screen different colors) then when the game was over I was back at level 1 and can't play a damn game had to do another account and play fine its the my other profile that messed up It sucks ass that i had to create a new account

I also just bought this game cause i lost my old copy over the years and it entirely doesn't work at all. same bullshit as the msg before me, it instantly goes to a screen asking call of duty modern warfare "Yes" or "No" are the options and neither work or do anything. I literally just bought this copy and have never played on it. I'm going to try and get my money back and if i cant i'm suing for false advertisement. A game that doesn't work at all! Fuck you!
Iv had the same copy of cod4 for the ps3 with no problems what so ever then yesterday went on to play it an when i press x on "play online" it takes me back to my home screen? I thought it was my ps3playin up but i can get on mw3 without problems so i tried mw2 and i cant even get to the 1st menu without bein kick off tha game and back to my home screen! Im so mad with this as i love these games and cant play um sum 1 plz help.......

i was having the same problem as you. the solution that works for me was to unplug the router, load game and re-conect router. unfortunately this has to be done everytime you play the game.
Thank you for the hint about unplugging the router and replugging it in. My son had bought a used version from Gamestop (you can return in 7 days if you don't like it or it doesn't work). He had returned it because it had this problem and got another disc. The person at gamestop said that this problem happens when you played the game before, the memory gets corrupted, but we had already had the memory wiped out, so we knew that wasn't the problem. I stumbled on your comments, and told him what to try - and voila - it worked. Nice thing is, if he doesn't feel like dealing with unplugging it everytime, he has 6 days to play the game before he needs to take it back to get his cash back.
Bought my son a new ps3 for Christmas and it came with the game and it doesnt work at all-wont let select yes or no..been out and bought another one..exactly the same! not happy
I also bought it for christmas and the yes no confirm screen is on i call tech support and all they can say is unplug my router and it works but who in the hell wants to do that everytime i want to play and i have two copies so my son and i can play , I wish someone would do something about this or pull the game out of the stores .

I had the same problem but i found a way to play online when it says Downloading game settings for like a minute what you do is turn your router of an back on sign back in and try again works for me
Every time I go to play online on COD4 on my PS3, all of the games I could play, were all dark and I wasn't able to select any of them. It's becoming an issue for me, because I love games like this one. But I don't want to play the campaign..Also, before, I was able to play just fine. & It's not my internet connection or anything. So I'm wondering why it's the past few weeks that I'm not able to select any online game to play.
this happened to my cousin, it may have been that you have been hacked and had points deducting so much that you are under rank 1 therefore cannot even play team deathmatch. im afraid the only solution is to create a new online account :/

in this case you should be able to party up with a friend and play anything he can till you are back above level 1 just my opinion
I discovered a solution to the "DOWNLOADING GAME SETTINGS" problem. If it says that while choosing game mode, then hit "circle" then try again. It could take a long time, but it worked for me. If your lucky the problem will go away completely.

I patched my codwaw but when i enter the lobby no all the servers have no people IN IT! Something like... (asadsk)..(0/30) players. And even if i tried i cant enter!!

This would be my 4th or 5th atempt in downloading this stupid message that pops up. This time when I started it, I cracked a beer and turned my tv input to the timewarner channels. Well 6 beers 3 shots and one movie down and its still saying the same thing,[downloading game settings]. I figure that if its not gonna fix itself within the 2hours that i watched my FX-movie. Its not gonna fix it self on it own. F**k COD as far as im concerned...get what u pay for my ass!
If your router supports Upnp (Universal Plug-n-Play), disable it. This is what fixed my downloading game settings nightmare. The only way I could play COD4 was to connect the PS3 directly to the cable modem which is just annoying. Hope that helps anyone. If this works for you, hit send me a note on PSN. BustedForPlaying.

I can online on that game for my mac for while then it says " internet connection lost" They need to F***ING FIX THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!! IT IS 2011 AND ALL MY GAMES WORK EXCEPT THIS ONE. IT HAS WORKED LONG ENOUGH FOR ME TO MAKE IT TO LEVEL 39 AND THATS IT!
adsl 2 speed nice and fast, mwf3 at best 3 green bars mwf2 at best 2 yellow, black ops 1 orange bar same for cod4 lag unreal and i paid for all of these games the extra maps never again what a crap server and a rip off im going back to xbox never had this trouble with them or unplugging modems

i can get online with any other game (including borderlands mw2 uncharted 2 etc.) but when i go on this one it just says "downloading internet settings" and it stays like that for up to five minuets until i quit.

Well its 2010 now and my internet still isnt working for that game only.
i bought the game about 2 days ago , the moment it got fully downloaded onto my ps3, i played its online, and this lag stated to come and destroy the fun of the games online!!! its horrible and discusting... i spent my $50 for sumptin thats fun, not a game were it lags like crazy. Look, wenever i play the online and i shoot someone, well i dont shoot someone because i know im aiming at them and shooting at them, but he doesnt die, hell it doesnt even give me a hit-marker, then he stabs me or simply shoots me and i die... THEN in the kill-cam it shows that i wasnt even aiming at the guy! WTF ACTIVISION!

i was without internet for a long time because i was moving...finally got online...hopped on the COD4 and my connection was 95% shit at 99% of the time i played!...its ruining my kdr!...i hate it...someone needs to get their act together on fixing this fast...

Im doing what i shouldve done a long time ago and thats buy all my games from now on for the XBOX360, dont u guys realize that the PSN (PIECE SHIT NETWORK) Is the problem here, no wonder its free. I could honestly tell u that xbox live has never once given me a problem (not once!) so for those who think that the servers are the main problem for our misfits your wrong buddy boy its the actual PSN itself. DO YOUR HOMEWORK and INVEST YOUR MONEY INTO 360 ITS TOTALLY WORTH IT TRUST ME.

Ok well i guess no one as found a solution to the prob.... because im still having it. Im have the same prob just as you said, the loading screen comes up but it just keeps saying DOWNLOADING SETTINGS..
hey i just bought the game today and was awaiting to play the game that made me emark on my FPS journey but to my dismay I'm downloading settings for an hour. fucking pissed. lmk or just reply on here if you've found the cure to this cancerous plague.

I have no connecting problems or getting into a game and playing the only problem I have is taht i have a major LAG on my games, what the fuck is up with that I mean I unload half a clip of bullets into a guys face from point blank range and the fucker doesn't die n he shoots me like once n bang I'm on the ground already, n when I throw grenades they guy doesn't really throw the grenade till like 1 1/2 to 2 seconds after I press the button how the fuck can I get rid of this lag and also the glitching too which happens on occasion.

You're way too late, it's much more likely to be a problem with your own network than anything else, this article is very old and the game has been patched. The game runs fine, you need to look at your connection.
I've tried all the different technical manipulations possible and I WASTE MORE TIME WAITING THAN PLAYING. Since the problem is not isolated within a small group, but rather within the whole gamer community, I think it's wise to start a petition...we shelled out $60 for this damn game to play online!
Who knows how to start a proper petition? My money back please!
getting really pi**ed now got cod4 dec 08 only had intermittent probs which i cud put up with but now ill be lucky to get connected at all. it gets to downloading game settings an thats it.

After months of problems and trying all of the above - no sooner had I posted the rant above when I came accross a fix.
Turned off UPnP (universal plug n play) on my router
all is now well

I wonder where they stand legally - i.e. game not fit for purpose - Everyone on mass should ask for a refund.
I'm fed up of all the forum posts where people claim they "have the fix" by port forwarding, turning router on and off, standing on one leg and singing We Will Rock You backwards in ancient Greek etc. etc.
There are so many people with different kit and set ups that some things work for them but not for others.
I've tried
Static IP on PS3 and port forwarding
Static IP on PS3 and DMZ
Deleting update and re-installing
Deleting Saved Games
Various reboot sequences
Changing my clan tag
Going into each class
Different router
Different PS3 (bought another one for my son - same issue!)
Plus other wierd and wonderful suggestions that are out there.
I don't have problems with any other games (including Cod 5 WAW) - It must be something on the server side!
