Call of Duty 4 - Hints for Online Domination

A lot of people play a lot of Call of Duty 4, but most of them aren’t good at it. Or, to phrase it better, the people they’re playing against are better, so here’s a little guide - a list of hints and ideas that should help you be the winner of every match you play.

Now, playing online is pretty much the best thing about any game that plays online - there’s nothing quite like blowing your friend’s (or complete stranger’s) arms off and scattering their guts all over the wall behind them, and it’s done particularly well in COD4, as I’m sure you already know. Whilst you can ignore the hints located in this, shall we say, holy grail of posts, it’s not really recommended. You might think you’re good, but there are hundreds of thousands of COD4 players who are better than you (and I’m not exaggerating).

In fact, this is even the advice of one of those people who are better than you, and me, and many, many other people, so it’s recommended you take note.

1. Choose your game type. This is, obviously, crucial. You have to choose the game type you prefer, your favourite, the gametype you happen to enjoy most. If you enjoy it, you’ll do it better.
2. Learn your spawn sites, you’ve gotta learn where you teammates are, and where they should be. You’ll spawn with them, remember, but they could be under attack (which means you will be when you spawn), so be careful. There’s nothing more disconcerting and aggravating than spawning and dying instantly.
3. Name your map areas. If you name parts of the map, you can refer to them to your teammates (e.g. ‘incoming at the church’) for streamlined communication during battles, and team cooperation and communication is the key to success.
4. Choose your perks wisely - they should match your playing style (Offensive, defensive or balanced), and also your role in the team. You should try everything just to find what you’re better suited to.
5. Grenades - effective use of grenades are essential to getting high scores. Consider ‘trick nades’, which are grenades that are thrown within a few meters of enemy spawns at the beginning of games, vehicle chaining, one grenade under a vehicle will make the vehicle explode, and maybe cause a nearby vehicle to explode…etc.
6. Random/erratic movement. A headshot is an instant kill, so to avoid this you must keep your movements unpredictable, making already small target of your head even harder to hit. Jumping and crouching behind cover are also part of erratic movement.
7. Fire tactically. Short bursts of fire are much more accurate and effective than emptying your clip at someone - the longer you shoot, the more your bullets spread, and the recoil pushes your gun up too, so short burst are the key to quick kills.
8. Patience. Do not run straight into a gunfight, you’ll hit the floor with a couple of rounds worth of bullets in you within seconds. Use cover, and shoot from there. Dodge between cover to move closer to enemies, hide in dark areas to make it harder to hit you, etc.
9. Communication. If your team communicates with each other, giving heads up, warning about incomings, you’ll work much more effectively, with everyone being aware of what’s going on around them.
10. Finally, learn from experience. You will not become the super-war-machine you want straight away, and you will lose on your way there - and continue to lose every once in a while too, so don’t forget to identify why you lost; were you disorganised? Did you keep running into firefights? Were the other team using tactics, whilst your own team was just running around like a bunch of headless chickens with guns? Whatever the reason, learn from it by counteracting it.

Choosing your weapon: Consider three things when choosing your arms -
1. What’s your favoured weapon? If you’re not proficient with your weapon, then you won’t be very effective with it.
2. The map. For example, an uzi is useful in tight corridors, or a sniper rifle could be useful on wide, open maps with high points that are perfect vantage points.
3. Your team role. If you’re attacking, a sniper rifle isn’t going to be too useful - a machine gun or a shotgun are much more useful in this case. On the other hand, a sniper rifle is a very good match for defending.

The top five perks:
1. Extreme conditioning - enables players to run longer, which has obvious positives to it. Snipers can use this when they want to quickly get between sniping spots without getting a hole shot through their head by an enemy soldier.
2. Bandolier - pretty much extra ammo. There’s no better way to sign your death warrant in an FPS than to run out of ammo - it doesn’t matter what you say, melee attacks versus a machine gun is pretty much going one way, and running around a battlefield scanning the floor for a weapon is an open invitation for a sniper’s bullet.
3. Stopping Power - Increases the power of your bullets, so you can take out people much faster - very useful for those close encounters whilst you’re trudging through the battle field.
4. Deep impact - shooting through walls. Useful when you know there’s someone in the next room. but you’re very close to an untimely death. Shoot them through the wall, you’re bullets are hitting their mark when the cursor changes shape.
5. Martyrdom - drops a grenade when you die. Very useful all the time. Many players (especially newer players) will run to you after killing you to get your ammo, and, if there’s a grenade left behind, hot shrapnel, too.

Whilst I know you want to win, and these hints are there to help you do that, don’t forget that the point of any game is to enjoy it. Don’t get frustrated because you’re dying a lot, it’s part of getting better, just remember to have fun whilst you’re doing it, or you may as well stop playing.

  1. Thanks, mate. I played my very first online round of COD4 today, and ended up with 230 points in 10 minutes. My very first time playing COD4 online, and within the first 5 minutes I had a 14 kill streak. It helps that I was playing at my friend’s house with a grenade launcher-attached AK-47, though

  2. Good guide, I think all CoD and indeed FPS players (well especially new ones) should read this.

  3. Nice Guide, But people should’nt Relie on there other team members to win a match or to protect you, half the people that play have no communication skills at all and don’t know how to work as a team and half the time get themselves and you as well killed, so people just should remember that thinking for yourself helps most of the time then worrying about your teamates that have no clue whats goin on anyways….Peace My Homies_,._420

  4. any1 wanna join the am8 clan or want clan wars add me badgerskunk or my mate DIRTYROOTS, sound look forward to killin ya’ll

  5. Hey man, thanks for posting this. I’m sure a lot of people have benefited from this; including me. I played for 4 hours and got up to a rank of 18.

    thanks for your help

  6. rubbish guide lol

  7. nice guide. i’m sure it will help. ty

  8. not a great guide. half of those things don’t even help at all.

  9. Good guide. Ive played for a while nwo and am in my prestige aswell, id class myself as a good FPS player with faults and one of them includes me going all rambo style into the fire-fight. I think i knew most of the points but also you could add perfect perk combos for specific classes like sniping: Claymores, Iron lung, Uav Jammer. and others

  10. So does anyone notice that the killcam replay does not match up with what you saw. I mean there are times that I see an enemy and start shooting first, and the killcam will replay that I got beat to the trigger? Why is that. IS PS2 faster than Xbox, or is ther no difference.

  11. i dont talk but i dod follow my teammates protect them and save there lives(in game) but i do love to run into the middle of fire fights. LOOK FOR ME IN GAME IM (MIrrior7) on ps3…:)

  12. no difference Don i have that too

  13. While half this stuff is obvious, the other half is not very affective. Makes me wonder how much this guy has acutally played the game and won.

  14. Good stratagies. #1 is team work to win at any FPS that has teams, I mean DUH people! Most that play though have no clue how to cover each other. Best way to do it is atleast 2 always together. 2 snipers with overkill can easily rule all the maps except for Vacant. A good way to know if a team mate is playing as a team, he will move up and behind cover then aim in the direction you are needing to go. Then waits until someone moves past and does the same for him. If a full team moves this way with one covering the rear (watching behind the group) most of the mob like teams won’t stand any chance and you will see your kill to death ratio really get better fast.

  15. your guides okay, but seriously there are many flaws. for one.

Matrydom (excuse spelling) is useless. i realised how shit it was before i even hit my first prestige. steady aim on faster fire rate uns is more useful as you push forward. and for defending i think slower fire rates are better with deep impact, like the AK-47 for example.

Then you say clever use of microphones, well i think i rarely go into a room with people using mics for teamwork, more so i get told by americans how british i sound, and i dont csre about that.

    Heres my guide,
Subs.. Use the MP5 or P90 both with silencers.

    Steady Aim

  16. hey, i like the guide. i play on the ps3, and im a neutral player. im good most of the time. but i do have my off days. my acc name is DSTROYR14. so add me up if u read this, jsut tell me how u found me when we get into a party.

    my fave weaponset.

The primary sniper. (15 extra rounds 5 basic shots, sorry i forgot name)
M9 pistol. not silenced. so when u kill a guy his whole team knows u did it with a pistol.

    P1: Bandolier/ Claymore
P2: Stopping power (by default it should be with a sniper)
P3: Extreme conditioning./ deep impact (for those guys you can see on a mounted gun, but cant quite shoot.)

    THIS WEPON SET FTW :)

  17. Extreme Conditioning! I have been self-conscious for insisting on this perk, but the guide has confirmed it. I like all the other perks you mentioned, too. Sometimes I do run into a firefight, or out into the open. But it’s usually when I am bored. So many people like being snipers that it seems that they spend all of the game trying to find the perfect crevice. I guess I will just keep shooting their claymores or stabbing them in the back.

  18. I already knew all that on the guide. And martyrdom is not a good perk unless you just want to maybe get an extra kill, but most the time people realize you have it. It only works if a random person runs along and accidently runs into it. Kind of like when people throw the random grendaes through the air and get a lucky kill. I believe steady aim is more effective.

Also I hate snipers who live on overkill with the .50 cal and a P90 silenced. Its just retarded. Anybody can win a match with it or can kill anybody with it. I just think it is boring with a P90 all together. Its like a noob gun to me. You just shred whoever comes at you.

Also the LMG’s I do not like. You can lace anyone with them through any wall basically. Its like try and go against one with a sub or shotgun. They just start to unload on you. Plus I hate thos people who can snipe with them across the whole map. Its like hey I don’t see anyone or they see a flash of a sniper and they pop you. Its like only a sniper should reach that far or a few assualt rifles.

  19. To slipperybrick,
Your setups also sound pretty good. 2 things I might recommend and disagree on. For SMG when using the P90 go w/

    Silencer
    Perk 1 Bandolier
    Perk 2 Double Tap
Perk 3 Dead Silence or Steady Aim.

The P90 silenced is still fairly accurate w/ a silencer & a better “iron site” than most guns, & shoots at in impressive 800+ RPM - double tap boosts that fire rate close to 20 rounds per second. When I use this package in mid to close quarter combat I never finish w/ less than a 4:1 kill-death ratio.

And the LMG arsenal on COD 4 is actually drastically inaccrate on actual performance. LMGs are very deadly in real life combat. Countless times i have come face to face w/ an enemy, clearly opened fire 1st and they did not die - rather I died from 1-2 late shots from an assault rifle. The Saw would rip apart any recipient of its 750 rounds/min rate of fire while firing the same size rounds as an M16. It’s accurate up to 3,200ft. which no level on COD is that big. The LMGs are deffinitely under-glorified on COD 4!

  20. Dude, “December 3″ theres no reason to hate any part of this game. I really think that you can do better then saying that this game is hard when people do such and such. Also, just because you can’t play well against these setups doesnt mean that they are automaticly good setups. Keep playing but if you hate it then don’t.

  21. I just got a headset today, and started playing. I’m on 22 in ranking. I really, really like this game and this guide was awesommmeeee. <3

I’m froggiebaby in game. Come find me! :)

  22. my favorite smg classes are mp5 silenced and perk 1 is 3-frag or claymores (depends on map and game type), perk 2 stopping power, perk 3 dead silence or steady aim. p90 silence same perks. assualt guns are m16 and m4. my favorite thing to do is snipe and i always use the m4a03 sniper or sometimes barret with claymores, stopping power, and dead silence or iron lungs (not that important if it takes that long for u to aim u are going to be sniped.

  23. I’m here to let you all on a little secret and this secret is SEARCH AND DESTROY. Search and Destroy is one of the game modes which I love and can’t get enough of. It is basically two teams and one side has to plant a bomb and the other side has to defend the bomb sites. Now there are two reasons why I love it. #1 : The points are just orgasmic (lol). One kill is 50 ponts and planting/defusing a bomb is 100 points.
#2 : If you play like a ninja (which I do) this game mode is perfect for you. Now there are however some disadvantages to Search and Destroy or acutally just one; when you die, you don’t respawn until next round.
I know it sucks and when you first start playing Search and Destroy, you WILL DIE no matter what but in due time you will get better at it and trust me, it pays off.
Now I have only prestiged six times but if you see me play, your jaw will literaly drop. I’ve literally killed entire teams by myself while my teamates just sit there(lol). I average about 600-800 points a game. My highest was 1000 points but I’ve seen better(hey, im not the best). I have gunned down countless numbers of fully prestiged players( thats the level 55 gold cross). To tell you the truth, I really don’t know how I became so good but like I said before, if you see me play, your jaws will drop. Now this is my setup which I am going to show you and for all you noobs reading, ITS YOUR LUCKY DAY.

For my primary weapon, I use the MP5. I love this gun and you should learn it to love it to lol. I silence it of course and any idiots who plays without a silenced gun in S&D is a moron( except for snipers ). The only other two primaries I would use is the P90 and the M4.

For my secondary, a pistol is a pistol I always say but the Desert Eagle killsssss.

Ok and now for the most important part, the perks. If your perks don’t complement each other, you might as well stop playing.

    Perk #1 : 3 Frags/3 Special grenades(stun).
    Perk #2 : Stopping power.
    Perk #3 : Extreme Conditioning.

WARNING : For you noobs, these perks might now have any affect on you because stopping power is only good if you can aim(which most noobs can’t lol no offenese) and extreme conditioning is only good if you know the map like the back of your hand. The 3 grenades are self-explanatory.

Have fun and enjoying Search and Destroy.
And watch your backs because I have a tendency of running up behind people and slashing them(lol) which explains extreme conditiong. Anyways, have fun!!!!

  24. John, looking forward to aniquliate you at S&D.
    See you soon

  25. Hey guys just wanted to thank you for the tips and hints that you were happy to share with us COD4 wannabe winners.
I will certainly try out some the combos, you all suggested, and you never know, one day you may even get smoked by me using one of your much loved combos.

ACOG or red dot? or weapon dependant?
I am guessing tighter/confined map games then use silencer, but what about on more spaced/open map games………ACOG or red dot?

Just one other question, does router speed/quality drastically effect the online play experience? I swear I shoot some people 2 or 3 times with little or no effect.

Keep an out for MooseMann…………………..not that great, but I so love trying! Sneak up and shoot me in the foot or something, let me know you saw me on here!

    Cheers and keep having fun.
    MooseMann

  26. HERE IS A WISE TIP FROM A “GOLDEN CROSS,” The ACOG won’t count for shit if the equiped weapon has too much recoil, the lower the recoil, the better. The weapons work great with ACOG;

    Assault:
    -M16
    -M4
    -G3
    -G36c

    SMG
-Scorpion (Lowest recoil in the game)
    -P90

    Sniper
    -MA
    -M21
