Blu-Ray backed by PS3 Sony Sales
The PlayStation 3’s Blu-ray capacity will be used as a major prong in a sustained marketing assault by Sony ahead of the key Christmas period, according to SCE president Kaz Hirai.
ImageSpeaking to the Financial Times, Hirai said that Sony’s gaming division was working closely with Sony Pictures and Sony Entertainment to “get the Blu-ray message outâ€. However, Hirai acknowledged that marketing the PS3 as both a games console and high definition movie player was a tough “balancing actâ€.
“The PS3 is first and foremost a video games machine but we want to say – by the way, it’s a great Blu-ray player as wellâ€, he said.
Earlier this month, Square Eniz president Yoichi Wada criticized Sony’s inconsistent marketing of the PlayStation 3, saying the firm needed to decide whether it was promoting a games console or media hub to consumers.
While some analysts had expected Sony to announce a further PS3 price cut during the Tokyo Game Show, Hirai said that improving the console’s software portfolio was the priority.
“Going aggressive only on price without being able to back it up with content doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me,†he said.

I think it is a good strategy to get a lot of games out and then cut price right before Christmas. As for game versus media center, it just needs to do what it did for the PS2 when it was both a game console and a DVD player. But definitely need to put games as their top priority (securing more exclusive games, working with more developers to create close relationships with the big Japanese and US companies).
