The next-gen DVD format war between Blu-Ray vs HD-DVD is more like predicting which NFL teams will win the Super Bowl; numerous speculations and anticipations among supporters of both sides. Or we can look at this as if we are watching an exciting yet inconclusive boxing match that is going on T.V where in round 1, Sony is gaining momentum by announcing that the company plans to include Blu-Ray drive on Playstation 3, and in round 2, Microsoft plans to release external HD-DVD drive as an addon to existing market. Yes, an existing market folks. Microsoft is ahead of Sony in the competition by releasing Xbox 360 console November of last year hence the gaining of market share. However, the boxing match is not over yet.

However poetically we put this situation, some analysts believe that gamers will ultimately influence the direction of the war. People want convenience and people will have convenience is the conventional thinking of consumer electronic companies. The convenience part will be taken care of by both of these companies by releasing gaming platform with capability of playing high definition movies or content in near future.
In plain layman’s term, the outcome of this competition will ultimately rely on how many of these consoles are out there because gamers who are used to watching DVD movies on Xbox or Playstation 2 would do the same thing on their next-gen machine. Sony who was able to sell 80 million Playstation 2 saw huge success of the machine due to ability to watch movies and play games.

However, News.com suggests that If enough Xbox 360 users started watching HD DVD movies on those machines, Disney, Fox and other studios that have committed to making only Blu-ray discs might be persuaded to make movies in the HD DVD format, too. This shift could delay any resolution to the format showdown.

To us, definitely Sony PS3 will be a sure winner.
