Blinking a Disadvantage in Split/Second

Split/Second

With all eyes currently on the upcoming release of Gran Turismo 5 let me distract your attention from the windscreen for a moment.

While Gran Turismo since its birth has been firmly grounded in the world of reality, arcade styled alternatives offered by rivals are just as popular; such as the likes of the Burnout & Need For Speed  franchises to name a couple. Let me introduce ‘Split/Second’ being developed by Black Rock Studio & published by Disney.

In all honesty it feels like something of a mishmash of old ideas repackaged to form something new, see how many similarities you can pick out.

The game uses the premise of a reality TV show that involves contestants racing for the simple incentive of fame and fortune. Performing crowd pleasing driving feats however sets a whole new level of gameplay into action; destructible environments.

We’re not talking Motorstorm’s mud on the road level here, we’re talking a whole other level of destruction; Explosions, buildings collapsing & planes falling from the sky that alter the track in different ways be it creating shortcuts or obstacles for your opponents. Oh and the AI opponents can perform exactly the same actions as you can.

The footage I’ve seen so far certain look beautiful  although from the speed of the gameplay I doubt you’ll have much of an opportunity to appreciate the lovely environments that you’ll be racing through.

So keep your eyes open and moisten up your eyeballs for these links of some gameplay footage and a trailer.

  1. Ya I watched this before and it dose look good, My only concern is the game system, With everything getting destroyed around you how can this be fair to the first car in the race and the last one.

  2. I imagine the destructable environments will be wonderful when their working in your favour but incredably frustrating when its against you… when you crash on the second to last corner after leading the race since the start.
