Assassin’s Creed: A Never-ending Story?

Assassin’s Creed was unquestionably a big hit. Assassin’s Creed II looks to be an even bigger hit. But one has to wonder: after how many technically-impressive, gracefully-executed stealth kills will Ubisoft’s gameplay model start to get old?

When Xbox World 360 spoke to the game’s Creative Director Patrice Fortier about the likelihood of a third instalment, his response was this:

‘What’s so great about Assassin’s Creed is that we can just expand and expand [...] I’m often asked if we’re doing a third game after ACII… I mean, we could do 35 of these.’

Given there are so many inspirational historical periods that would make ideal settings for an assassin-oriented video game, it could be said that the series’ scope is essentially limitless. Even so, an ‘Assassin’s Creed XXXV’ does sound a bit far-fetched.

Also, in the same interview, Producer and fellow colleague Sébastien Puel went on to talk about possibility of a female protagonist:

‘It could be really interesting, but we’d need to find the right time period and place for that [...] we don’t want to just decide we want to change and have a female hero, as the first inspiration is always the time period. But if you’re talking about, say, World War II, the economies in England and France were run by women because the men were off fighting. So maybe in this context you [could be] a woman in England during WWII. Why not? Nothing prevents us from doing it.’

We’re apprehensive; in the words of playwright and poet William Congreve, ‘hell hath no fury like a woman scorned’. Arming one with instruments used to commit silent murders could have dire consequences.

One Response to “Assassin’s Creed: A Never-ending Story?”

  1. AC for me was all style and no substance. although it looked great, it was one of the most boring games i can remember since Horace goes skiing, for the spectrum 48k.
i cant speak for the 360, but perhaps part of the reason it sold so well on ps3 was there was a lack of games around when AC came out, ’cause i dont remember reading any good reviews.
