Analysts predict possible PS3 dealy til November

Gamastura reports following the “weak” showing of Playstation 3 at recent CES, analysts predict that Playstation 3 will not be launched until November. The main reasoning behind this prediction is due to “manufacturing challenges” and “Cost of Blu-Ray.” Sony displayed conceptual model of Playstation 3 rather than real demo of the machine. Few scripted demos were shown to attendees with no further information on the development of the next-gen console. Analysts believe that Playstation 3 is not ready for the supposed scheduled launch in Japan on the spring and followed by the U.S launch in the fall.

The largest factor in a potential delay would most likely be due to a manufacturing challenge, with Sony carefully maximizing the chip’s yield on the unit’s advanced “Cell Processor.” There is also the possibility of a lack of software support, though Sony Computer Entertainment of America’s Kaz Hirai stated at Sony’s Consumer Electronics Show keynote speech that over four thousand development units have been shipped.

Another possibility may be the cost of Blu-Ray technology, the media format Sony will be using for the console. Sony Chairman Howard Stringer maintains that the PS3 will contain a Blu-Ray player, and analysts predict a launch price of about $400. By comparison, both Samsung and Pioneer have recently announced consumer standalone Blu-Ray movie players in the four-digit range.

  1. I absolutely believe it will be a delay to until at least a november launch. If the PS3 would have been launched this spring, late spring or early autumn, would Sony really have kept quiet these months? Months where Xbox at least had some kind of momentum going? No way.. If you look at this soberly, look at what’s really the most probable thing, then I think Sony are experiencing delays on some major level for either the Cell technology or Blu-Ray. I think it was a bit overambitious and naive of them to just expect these three new technological platforms in development to just converge at exactly the right time. Probable some grand corporate plan, taken at high level, and in line with other great grand strategies at big corporate hierarchies (GM, Ford, and, well, Sony). For example, just look at how Blu-ray this autumn was having trouble getting support because it hadn’t been proven to have storage capacity anywhere near what was promised. That was just a couple of months ago..

  2. I just hoped ps3 will launch this year. Don’t care when this year.
