40GB PS3 With Smaller 65nm Cell Chip
Those of you who own the new, trimmed-down PS3 console, should find this news interesting. Word has it that the 40GB models, which hit US stores this Friday, are fitted with a leaner 65nm Cell chip, as well as a smaller heat pipe that, supposedly, reduces the console’s power consumption by 32.5% – i.e. from 200 Watts to 135 Watts. The PS3 should, in turn, expend less heat and make less noise.
The story comes via German web site Computer Base. No official response from Sony, but then, what would you expect them to say? “Yes, we did a good job; this is our statement saying we’re giving ourselves a pat on the back.” Seriously though, nice job, Sony. It should be mentioned that MS has also switched to 65nm production for their X360s.
